A Small Move

I'd run my office as a rental space for a long time. When I started Ordinary Seochon, I took the small room in the back as my studio. There was a reason I kept the space tidy and rented out the rest. I didn't want my workspace to feel too much like a workspace, cluttered and messy; I liked the idea of some extra income; and more than anything, I wanted to be in a space that always felt in order. A tidy room felt like a tidy mind.

The trouble was that this room barely got any of the air conditioning. Summers were hard, but I figured this was just my spot and put up with it for a few years. Then one day my wife said, offhand, why keep insisting on that hot room? Why not use the main room in the back instead? Taking that room meant giving up the rental, since it took up too much space, but I decided to give it a try.

At first it felt strange. But after a few days, oddly, it felt fresh. Same studio, same walls, same window, and yet just changing where I sat had changed the air in the room. It seems like nothing, but this small move brought something that had gone stiff in me back to life.

When I think about it, we're always living in fear of some distant future. We worry about days that haven't come, and in preparing for that future we end up mortgaging today. But what actually makes that future is my mood in this moment, the person I am today. If the present isn't whole, isn't happy, then no matter how wonderful the future looks, I don't think I'll ever quite arrive there. Work is the same. There were things that wouldn't come together no matter how long I sat at my desk under the pressure of time, and then I'd step out for some air, or have a drink with a friend, and come back to find they'd quietly untangled themselves. I keep learning, always a little too late, that my own mood has to be good first. Making today feel good, for myself, is the very thing that keeps not just me but my family and everything around me alive too. One small gesture, moving to a different seat, changes the air of a whole day.
